3rd Baltic Conference on E-Health in Hamburg, Germany
Thursday, 28 May 2009
The third Baltic Conference on E-Health will take place on September 16, again in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. This year the conference will be extended by a pre-opening session on September 15 (starting 14.30 h) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The pre-opening session features guided tours through the "new UKE" (Europe's most advanced hospital), various presentations, a panel discussion and the official reception for the international and national conference attendees. The conference will present a well-balanced mix of best practices and strategy-oriented presentations and workshops. Moreover, international solution and service providers will display and present their product and service achievements to policymakers, users, suppliers and implementation managers.

The primary aim of the English-language conference, organized by Baltic Sea Forum, Baltic Sea States Subregional Co-operation, Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and IBM - in cooperation with the University Medical Center (UKE) - is to provide a cross sector forum for healthcare providers from Russia, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Among the supporters of this year's conference focusing on "Cross-Border Healthcare" are German Hospital Society, Koch-Mechnikov-Forum, Finpro, Norgenta (North German Life Science Agency) and Gesundheitsinitiative Schleswig-Holstein.

The attendees including representatives from hospitals, governments, health insurance organizations, service providers and media will have the opportunity to exchange views and experiences among all those involved in health management. The conference program will focus on following topics:

1. Cross-Border Healthcare (experience and knowledge transfer, best practices, interoperability/interconnectivity, globalization, business intelligence/consulting and quality management)

2. Optimization of clinical and business processes as well as of hospital information and communication systems in order to increase the quality and economics of patient care

3. Telemedicine
Moreover, the link between e-health and medical engineering will be discussed.

The program will feature presentations like e. g. "From St. Petersburg to Khabarovsk - a digital OR integration network", "Realizing Value on Investment in E-Health through Process Optimization and Change Management" and "Accidents and Emergency - from Ambulance to Discharge with New Technology". Furthermore, speakers of WHO and the EU are requested to present topics like "E-Health Strategy of WHO" and "EU Directive on Cross-Border Care".

Another very important topic is the crucial financial situation of hospitals and clinics. Due to rising costs (personnel, energy, food, etc.) and increasing regulatory constraints, many hospitals are underfunded. How the deployment of high-quality E-Health solutions will contribute to solve these problems, is presented by several speakers. Their presentations deal with various aspects of process optimization in hospitals, improvement of continuity and quality of care by e-health solutions as well as eLearning tools.

The panel discussion on "Cross-Border Healthcare" will highlight the impact of globalization on healthcare systems and services, requirements regarding interconnectivity, interoperability and standardization as well as the need for cross-border co-operation.

All conference presentations are held in English (no simultaneous interpretation) by speakers from the Baltic Sea Region countries and the USA.
